My weight had crept up since I got married in 2006 and I had gone from a reasonably respectable 10 - 10.5 stone to about 17.5 stone (not good on a 5'2" frame!). I had lost weight previously with the 5:2 diet but had started to lose heart with that and had yo-yo'ed back to just over 16 stone in January this year. I was really fed up and dreading another summer of sweating profusely and the itching and chafing, not to mention the two weddings we had to attend! I wanted to do something but it needed to be something I'd not done before and something which would get me some quick results. It must have been fate because I don't think I would have come across Slim & Save had it not been for a friend who had done it coming to dinner and talking about it - she was using it to get her weight down for her wedding in March.
Although I was a bit skeptical about VLCDs (having done one before and not having got past day 4) - this sounded different, so after talking it over with my husband I placed my order. I was planning to start on the Monday but the packs arrived and I decided to take the bull by the horns and start on the Friday. I started by doing the Simplicity Plan as I wanted to feel that I knew what I was doing before trying the Lifestyle Plan. I found that bars and cookies work well to take to work, and soups mix up ok in a mug, without being obvious that they are anything "different" - I would be too self-conscious to use my shaker at work!
I was delighted to lose a stone in my first month, then the weight just kept coming off, 10lb in March (had a few days off due to the friend's wedding), a stone in April and I am now 64lb lighter than when I started! I know that I could not have achieved this on any other diet - the support on Facebook is fantastic and I think that not being allowed alcohol is key for me - on other diets where it is allowed - I would indulge as a treat, then invariably have more than I should, then get the munchies and attack the cupboards and before I knew where I was a week of eating salad had been undone!!
I kept a pair of jeans from when I was at my heaviest and have taken pictures of myself in them at regular intervals - it amazes me how much my body shape has changed! I still have a stone and a half to get to my initial target so I mustn't get complacent - I know my downfalls - not drinking enough water and not spacing my packs regularly throughout the day. I think the best advice I can give is this: we are all in control of what we put in our mouths (unless you really have been tied up and are being force-fed of course!) So if you take a bite of something you shouldn't, you have the option to spit it out and throw that food away - or you can eat that one thing, which may then become a binge, which can become a bad day, then a bad week.
None of us are perfect and we can all get tempted/distracted but it's about training yourself to activate that mechanism which says "Hey - hang on - what am I doing - do I really want to sabotage my weight loss so far?" I am feeling so much better and more confident now - I've started doing self-defence, started jogging again and just have to get used to my husband's new nickname for me - "slim" (he's so original!).
