Rise and shine sleepy head!

With winter now and truly set in and we are waking up to ever more dark mornings, its more difficult than ever to start your day focused and ready for the day ahead. Willpower is strongest in the morning so it makes good sense to start your day positively, here are some top tips to help you get that get up and go to have a successful day on plan and beat the winter blues.

Get plenty of rest

Make sure that you are getting 6-8 hours sleep each night as adequate sleep is a key part of a healthy lifestyle, and can benefit your heart, weight, mind, and more.

You snooze you lose!

Rise & Shine Sleepy Head - Feeling TiredStop hitting the Snooze button for an extra 10 minutes. When you let yourself go back to sleep, your body thinks, “False alarm! I guess I didn’t need to do anything, because we're not getting up after all,” and settles in. When that buzzer goes off a second time, your body and brain are taken by surprise, resulting in that groggy, fuzzy-headed feeling, so you’ll probably feel more out of it even though you actually spent extra time in bed.

Get hydrated

After a good nights sleep your body need to rehydrate itself, drinking a glass of water first thing will jumpstart your body’s metabolism by about 24% which can aid maintaining a healthy weight and it will also help flush out those toxins that have been accumulating whilst being asleep.

Put some uplifting music on and boogie!

Research has shown that listening to upbeat music and positive lyrics in the morning can have a positive effect on us by releasing Dopamine one of the hormones released to help motivate as well as release the “feel-good” hormone.

Have a good breakfast

Many studies have linked eating breakfast to good health, including better memory and concentration. Skipping the morning meal can throw off your body’s rhythm of fasting and eating. When you wake up, the blood sugar your body needs to make your muscles and brain work their best is usually low. Breakfast helps replenish it. If your body doesn’t get that fuel from food, you may feel zapped of energy - and you'll be more likely to overeat later in the day. What better reason is there to start the day with Slim & Save Banoffee or Chocolate Porridge!

Mornings can signify the bright start of a brand new day. But for others, when the alarm clock rings, it's like a slow walk through treacle, dragging oneself out of bed and heading straight to the coffee maker. Although not everyone is a morning person, starting your morning off to a positive start is actually quite important. Studies show that when you begin your day in a positive mood, it increases your chances of remaining focused as the day progresses and surely this is a benefit to us and everyone around us.

So wake up, shake up, and give yourself a positive attitude to each and every day!

Try a long bubble bath, comfy pyjamas, a hot chocolate SnS shake , scented candles and good book.

I have to thank slim n save as I sleep so much better having lost some weight and without an over-full tummy! My tip is to highlight the importance of ‘rest’ not ‘sleep’. I have always had difficulty sleeping, but I make sure my body rests and that I slow my mind with breathing exercises. Then if I drop off to sleep, it is a bonus! Things I have found helpful include a warm shake as my last pack (very yummy and relaxing), a warm bath, listening to classical music, and sleep meditation apps. Unhelpful things include too much screen time and too much light. I wish everyone reading a good nights sleep! Xx

I ‘feed like a baby ‘ during the day! I have my last pack around 6 pm. Then take the dog for a short walk! I try to go to bed about the same time , with no tv, or phone or computer work done for a least an hour before bedtime. I have a Neales yard infuser with lavender oils in my bedroom. Snuggle down and listen to a ‘talking book ‘
On waking in the morning I have my 4 legged alarm clock! She wakes me up letting me know she’s hungry and needs a walk! Shower and we eat our breakfast together before going for our morning walk. I’m a creature of habit with my night time and morning routine!
Switching off completely before I go to sleep ensures that I have a restful night sleep!

I have a bar at around 8pm, then have a hot drink at bedtime - peppermint or green tea or a hot oxo if I have restless legs. I read in bed with the electric duvet on and that sends me to sleep.
In the morning my Fitbit wakes me with a gentle buzz on my arm! A large black coffee gets me going and if I’m dashing out a quick shake is very convenient!

I love my evenings, a hot delicious brownie then a lovely warm bath before diving under the covers.

For sleep I use the lavender pillow spray by IT. It's all natural and smells Devine.

The thing that gets me right off is a spray of lavender essential oil mist on my face and the pillow. Works a treat!

I currently work shifts, so my routine varies slightly whether I'm on days or nights or off. That being said, the routine is similar. When I'm not working (or when I'm on nights) my husband and I normally eat dinner between 1730 & 1800 while we play along with Pointless. If I have to have my 3rd pack after dinner, I will try to have it before 2100 as my go to bed time is between 2200 & 2230 - giving me between 6 & 6.5 hours of sleep a night. Before I drift off to sleep, I tell myself what time I want to be up by in the morning. It doesn't always work, but I am normally awake about 10 minutes before my alarm! I currently have a caffeinated beverage only once per day and I make sure that I have it more than 4 hours before I'm intending to go to bed. Breakfast happens when I'm hungry, usually 2 - 3 hours after I've woken up.

I used to be a "snooze" girl, but now I get up with the alarm (or before if I'm lucky!) because, as Joanne commented, I used to feel fuzzy-headed if I snoozed the alarm. I find that it's much harder to get going during the winter due to the dark mornings and chilly temps, but I normally just make a bee-line for a nice warm shower to get me going for the day. If I have time, I will turn the radio on before I go to work and hope that they play some upbeat music (that I know) to get me going.

My main tips would be have dinner early, have a relaxed bath after and before going to bed make sure you drink a cup of tea to relax it makes ot easier to fall asleep. Phone and tablet well away :-).

Lucky for me I am a morning person despite pressing that snooze button, however breakfast first thing is a no no for me. I have glass of water and coffee then shake a couple of hours later. It is important to read advice but also important to listen to your body to know what's best for you.
