Are you looking forward to getting out and about and enjoying the sun this summer? Here are our best Slim & Save tips to help make your summer and the sunshine safe, healthy and enjoyable.
Don`t underestimate the strength of the sun whilst out in the garden or walking about, any cooling breezes will trick you into thinking that you are ok and not going to burn. Make sure your skin is safe! Sunburnt skin leads to water retention, causing your kidneys to overload and store water in other parts of the body.
Hydrate! Keep drinking your water quota and add a little more on very hot days, as the body is less efficient at removing fluid from tissues in the heat.
BBQ`s are a lovely way to get together and relax whilst catching up with family and friends. If you are holding a BBQ look at having lean burgers wrapped in lettuce leaves or between two Portobello mushrooms or even do a mini burger (I use meatballs and flatten them) stack on a cocktail stick. You can flatten chicken and season and pop onto skewers adding veg chunks. This also works well with sausages, we all love those on the BBQ. Griddle veg as this releases the sweetness. Cauliflower steaks are my favourite during the summer just a quick spray of frylight and some garlic and a sprinkle of garam masala.
For vegetarian options Quorn has lots of great options that work well on the BBQ. Make up plenty of different varieties of salads, bowls of dips. Some of my favourites are made with Fat free Greek yoghurt and mustard. Try it with garlic and chives or a nice spicy one with paprika, chilli and garlic. As for sauces, the nomato sauce works great as a relish and can be spiced up if you like!
Have lots of non-alcoholic iced drinks already made up (you can pick up kilner dispenser jars), Iced flavoured teas, Slim & Save Water flavours and Coke Zero, Diet Cream Soda, these cans or bottles can be kept cold in a bucket of ice. (We use a Flexi garden tub).
If you have been invited to a BBQ and are unsure as to what you will be served, take some of your favourite items with you in a Tupperware container and you never know, you may get asked for one of your recipes!
Picnics are another way to spend a lovely day out with family and friends, again it just takes a little thought and preparation and you are able to join in without having to tuck into those stodgy bread sandwiches! You can replace the bread element by making little egg white omelettes or use lettuce leaves as wraps or Cloud bread and you could even use cucumber sliced length ways. Frittata’s are also great as are mini crust-less quiches filled with sliced ham, cheese and veg. You could also prepare vegetable sticks and raw cauliflower or broccoli to dip in a dressing made from Boursin light or Fat free Greek yoghurt.
Make your chicken exciting by adding spices to it to liven it up. Thinly slice a medium rare steak, eggs, smoked salmon or tuna, all of which can all be added to salad to make it extra tasty and filling.
