Summer time tips!

Are you looking forward to getting out and about and enjoying the sun this summer? Here are our best Slim & Save tips to help make your summer and the sunshine safe, healthy and enjoyable.

Don`t underestimate the strength of the sun whilst out in the garden or walking about, any cooling breezes will trick you into thinking that you are ok and not going to burn. Make sure your skin is safe! Sunburnt skin leads to water retention, causing your kidneys to overload and store water in other parts of the body.

Hydrate! Keep drinking your water quota and add a little more on very hot days, as the body is less efficient at removing fluid from tissues in the heat.

healthy cauliflower steaksBBQ`s are a lovely way to get together and relax whilst catching up with family and friends. If you are holding a BBQ look at having lean burgers wrapped in lettuce leaves or between two Portobello mushrooms or even do a mini burger (I use meatballs and flatten them) stack on a cocktail stick. You can flatten chicken and season and pop onto skewers adding veg chunks. This also works well with sausages, we all love those on the BBQ. Griddle veg as this releases the sweetness. Cauliflower steaks are my favourite during the summer just a quick spray of frylight and some garlic and a sprinkle of garam masala.

For vegetarian options Quorn has lots of great options that work well on the BBQ. Make up plenty of different varieties of salads, bowls of dips. Some of my favourites are made with Fat free Greek yoghurt and mustard. Try it with garlic and chives or a nice spicy one with paprika, chilli and garlic. As for sauces, the nomato sauce works great as a relish and can be spiced up if you like!

Have lots of non-alcoholic iced drinks already made up (you can pick up kilner dispenser jars), Iced flavoured teas, Slim & Save Water flavours and Coke Zero, Diet Cream Soda, these cans or bottles can be kept cold in a bucket of ice. (We use a Flexi garden tub).

If you have been invited to a BBQ and are unsure as to what you will be served, take some of your favourite items with you in a Tupperware container and you never know, you may get asked for one of your recipes!

Picnics are another way to spend a lovely day out with family and friends, again it just takes a little thought and preparation and you are able to join in without having to tuck into those stodgy bread sandwiches! You can replace the bread element by making little egg white omelettes or use lettuce leaves as wraps or Cloud bread and you could even use cucumber sliced length ways. Frittata’s are also great as are mini crust-less quiches filled with sliced ham, cheese and veg. You could also prepare vegetable sticks and raw cauliflower or broccoli to dip in a dressing made from Boursin light or Fat free Greek yoghurt.

Make your chicken exciting by adding spices to it to liven it up. Thinly slice a medium rare steak, eggs, smoked salmon or tuna, all of which can all be added to salad to make it extra tasty and filling.

Joanne JonesSo what are you waiting for, slap on the sun cream and turn up the heat on the BBQ or get your picnic blanket out and get the party started!

What do you do when you’ve exhausted all your packs for the day but still feeling peckish? I simmer one Knorr Herb Infusions pot with Zero noodles and a splash of Franks Red Hot Original Cayenne Pepper Sauce for 5 minutes and hey presto, you’ve got a lovely filling soup with a kick! Try it!

I get lolly moulds and make up my fave shake, four usually out of one pack. You're not missing out when everyone has a treat and the pack lasts ages.... bonus

Love a BBQ. I get the strangest looks when I have my home made burger between lettuce leaves and my orange or lemon s&s drink with it and lots of water between. I am usually the chef on the Barbie I'm quite happy to do that as it keeps me away from the nibbles xx

BBQ 's in my family are a way of life for my family during the summer! We'll sometimes smoke fish as well in our smoker.
Just because we're on an eating plan doesn't mean we can't go out and enjoy ourselves with the rest of the family and friends!
Always try to plan ahead! I realise it is not always possible but it does make things a lot easier.
Use plenty of herbs and spices !

I make a dip out of Fage 0% , roasted bell peppers (then blitzed) fresh garlic , coriander and cumin. Salt and pepper to taste. Ideal to dip your on plan vegetables! This 'dip' I use as a marinade for chicken, salmon , beef before barbecueing it !

Beef burgers I make my own so I can control the size , although I do make slightly bigger ones for those not watching their weight! I have a stash of these in the deep freezer! It's amazing how good things are if they are well seasoned.

Burger : 5% fat beef, egg to bind , onion, garlic (optional) Salt and pepper to taste. Italian herbs - quantity varies depending how many I'm making! I weigh 130 g for each burger, and freeze until needed. As I said previously I do make slightly bigger ones for the people not on plan.

Salad dressing: use fage 0% , fresh dill , garlic ,salt and pepper to taste.

Thai style dressing ( this can also be used as marinade. )
1/3 cup soy sauce
1/4 cup water
2 tbsp malt vinegar
4 cloves garlic finely diced
1/2 inch fresh ginger peeled and finely diced
2 tsp honey
2 small chillies deseeded fingely chopped
Salt , pepper to season.

If you're having friends over for summer meal or BBQ they don't have to know you're on an eating plan ! The meal you prepare should still be tasty and inviting!
Fluids in the warmer weather is a must! Always have chilled drinks that you can have available. You need to drink more on the hotter days.
Make lollies using the water flavourings !
Make ice cream using your shake packs !

Don't feel left out of the summer get togethers! Go out and enjoy yourself! Knowing that you are on the way to making your body the best outfit you have!!

Have a wonderful summer!

I love to have ice lollies in the hot weather. Just make up the shake as normal, pour into lolly mounds and pop into the freezer. Then you can have an ice lolly just like everyone else. The vanilla ice cream flavour are yummy but so are the strawberry and banana ones!

Summer is supposed to be fun! So keep it that way! Don’t let your diet stop you from joining in. There are loads of salad and veg options that you can enjoy while still following simplicity even if you just pop some vegetables skewers on the bbq. To really feel like you’re joining in add some chicken breast or other lean meat or fish and make yourself some nice colourful skewers. You can also add whichever spices are your favourite or make dips using fat free yogurts like fage.

Make your shakes extra tast and refreshing by blending with ice cubes! Nice thick ice creamy shakes are perfect for a nice summery breakfast. My favourite is lemon yogurt with about 50ml of water and about 8 ice 7 ice cubes.

Stretch your allowance of the approved fizzy drinks or fruit cartons by freezing them into ice cubes or ice lollies. A Coke Zero ice lolly means you can still feel like you are getting a summery treat or the Sainsbury’s cherry and black current flavoured water as ice cubes in your water give it a lovely refreshing hint of flavour.

Keep drinking that water! In the heat we need even more of it to keep our weight losses going.

And take advantage of the lovely weather to get out for some lovely walks or a splash in the water!

Enjoy your summer and make some happy memories with family and friends!

I made my own mini burgers with lean mince, had vegetable kebabs by loading skewers with red and yellow peppers, onion and mushroom with a sprinkle of your favourite herbs and spices. I also used the burger pack with less water and packed that around a skewer it was lovely with lots of fresh crunchie lettuce leaves, cucumber sticks and a blob of cottage cheese. Delicious

I'm normally a Simplicity girl but I've learned that being flexible and switching to Lifestyle days helps keep me on track. At a bbq at the weekend I had steak with vege kebabs and didn't feel like I was missing out on tasty food or breaking my diet. So no guilty feelings and I'm still on track for another great weighloss this week!
