Melody Adams-Hughes Weight Loss Success Story

I have been overweight nearly all my adult life. I’d be lying if I said it never bothered me, it was more a case of I didn’t have the willpower to do anything about it.

In January 2015 my dad was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. He received chemo and radio therapies and was ‘OK’. In July 2015, my mum was admitted to A&E with stomach pains which turned out to be an aneurysm; they operated on her but as she already had COPD she unfortunately didn’t come round after the operation. After mum died, dad continued with his treatment and my brother and I looked after him. During this time, my weight rocketed. We were living on takeaways and if it wasn’t a takeaway, it was something quick and easy to cook which inevitably was not very healthy. I would also snack on crisps – crisps are to me what chocolate is to others. Dad died in April 2017 after battling cancer for over two years. My weight continued to rise as I ate my way through my grief.

In May 2018, I had booked a holiday in the Cotswolds for my hubby and I and our two gorgeous German Shepherds to celebrate hubby’s 60th birthday. In my mind, I could picture us taking the dogs for nice long walks and having a wonderful time. The reality was so, so different. I couldn’t walk very far at all, about 30 minutes (with a rest before making the walk back) and then I was completely shattered. So it ended up with both of us taking the dogs out once a day and hubby would take them out on his own while I sat in the cottage. Nothing like I had imagined. I knew then I had to do something.

Just after returning from the holiday, I had a general health check at my GP Surgery in which you were given a ‘score’ at the end as to your likelihood of having a heart attack, stroke etc in the years to follow. I scored very well (7%) as my blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels etc were all within normal range, the only thing that wasn’t good, was my weight. Although I was very pleased (surprised) by the results – I wanted to better it!

In June 2018, we watched a programme about dieting your way out of diabetes (hubby was diabetic). The diet the group followed was a Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD). The group on the programme had tremendous results. So hubby found out exactly what diet it was – Slim & Save VLCD.

I looked at their website and ordered a starter pack for the 2 of us. Hubby and I started the diet on 02 July 2018. After week one I lost 13lb. OK, you nearly always have a big loss the first week – week two, 5lb loss. Having lost 1st 4lb in two weeks was encouragement enough to keep me going. I have lost on average 3lb a week throughout. I was off plan for approximately a month for holidays, Christmas and my 60th birthday.

The change has been incredible. I bought a Fitbit when I started – I was averaging approx. 400 steps a day (house to car, car to office and back again). I now walk approx. 8,000 – 10,000 steps a day. I have a lot more energy, I’ve a lot more pride about my appearance; after a break of about three years, I’ve started to wear make up again and I have a lot more interest in clothes than ever before and more importantly, I’m happy.

My hubby is no longer diabetic which is fantastic. Last month I completed 5k Race for Life (walking, maybe I’ll run it next year); I raised £145 which I’m extremely proud of. I’ve also enjoyed a day trip to Amsterdam with my two daughters where we walked all day, a total of just under 11 miles! Hubby and I have a holiday booked to Zante in September, our first holiday abroad for about 20 years. I’m no longer worried I won’t fit in the seat on the plane.

I know I’m still technically overweight but I’m at a weight I feel happy at.
