What is Ketosis?
Recently there has been a revolution in the world of weight-loss. A process has been discovered that maximises weight-loss safely and efficiently without the need for calorie counting or starvation. That process is called Ketosis.
You may already have heard of Ketosis. Ketosis is a natural process that occurs in our bodies. This feature explains all you need to know about Ketosis. Firstly, lets start with the background..
Most people become overweight because they take in more fuel (i.e. food and drink), which is measured in kilocalories, than their body can use. The excess fuel is stored as fat. Fat is usually stored under the skin in areas like hips, thighs and waist and around the vital organs – no surprises there!
When an individual decides to lose weight they usually have three criteria for their choice of weight-loss method. The three criteria are usually

- to lose weight quickly
- to be able to maintain their new lower weight

So how does Ketosis work?
When you are eating conventional food which is normally high in carbohydrates (i.e. you are not on a weight-loss plan or diet) your body will make energy by converting kilocalories in your body. The production of glucose is involved in this process and is stored as glycogen. When you are on a VLCD, your level of glucose becomes depleted as your kilocalorie and carbohydrate intake is reduced significantly. On a VLCD your body will automatically take its energy directly from your fat stores (hips, thighs and waist etc). In summary, when you are on a VLCD your body naturally uses up or ‘burns’ your existing body fat (which is why you lose weight so quickly).
Technically speaking, your body usually takes its energy from three places: conventional food that you have recently eaten, glycogen and existing fat stores. Taking energy from recently eaten food, which contains carbohydrates, is usually the first port of call for your body. If you are on a VLCD you will not have ‘eaten’ conventional food (e.g. carbohydrates) so your body will need to go elsewhere for its energy. Glycogen is the next port of call as it is a type of sugar that is stored in your liver and muscles. After about three days your glycogen stores will be used up and your body will start to take its energy directly from your stores of body fat. On a Slim & Save VLCD you will be consuming fewer kilocalories than you require. You will therefore be using your fat reserves without even trying.
When your existing body fat reserves are used to produce energy they go through a process called Ketosis. This is the scientific name for when the liver ‘burns’ (oxidizes) the fat. This creates substances called Ketones and the process is known as ‘being in Ketosis’. Ketones are a naturally formed chemical chain of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen atoms.
During Ketosis you will literally be living off your own fat – and losing weight quickly and efficiently. You will remain in Ketosis and producing Ketones until you cease your Slim & Save VLCD and start consuming conventional food/carbohydrates again.
How does Ketosis make you lose weight?
Firstly, let us state for the record that Ketosis is natural and is not harmful.
When fat is released from fatty (adipose) tissue it travels to your liver where it can be used to either make more fat or be ‘burned’ by producing the energy that you need to keep your body ‘ticking over’. The energy production pathway produces the Ketones. We always have Ketones in our blood at all times, but usually at low levels.
When we fast (eat nothing at all) or embark on a VLCD the Ketones in our blood increases while we are ‘in Ketosis’.
Being in Ketosis means the Ketone blood levels are high enough to allow the Ketones to exit our bodies in our urine.
To lose weight quickly our body needs to be in Ketosis and therefore be making its energy by burning our fat reserves.
Will I notice anything when I am in Ketosis?
On a VLCD being in Ketosis is a really positive thing. It ensures that your fat reserves are being burned quickly and efficiently and are being used as energy, so you will get all the energy that you need to do all the things that you usually do.
Apart from losing weight pretty quickly during Ketosis, you may also experience a feeling of increased energy, euphoria (happiness) and a feeling that you are not hungry. In a few cases being in Ketosis can cause a slight aroma on your breath (sweet smell). Most people claim that being in Ketosis makes them feel better than they have done for years.
What do I need to do to get into Ketosis?
When you are on a Slim & Save VLCD your body should automatically go into Ketosis after about three days. All you need to do then is to follow your Slim & Save VLCD and carry on as normal with your life.
A useful tip is to increase the amount of water that you drink. Being in Ketosis means that you will lose more water in the form of urine. Drinking more water will encourage the breakdown of more fat as the Ketones that are expelled in your urine are replaced with new ones produced as fat is being burned up. Drinking water will also keep you feeling hydrated and will also benefit your skin, hair and nails.
Above all, Ketosis is perfectly natural. It actually developed genetically as part of evolution when we were cavemen and women to allow our bodies to survive in times of famine (e.g. in between food being available from our hunting expeditions).
